Rahul call to slain leader kin

Chinsurah, Feb. 14: Rahul Gandhi today called up the elder brother of a slain Youth Congress leader in Hooghly and “expressed his condolence”, the president of the Bengal unit of the outfit said.

Soumik Hossain said the Congress vice-president wanted to speak to Avijit Rahman’s family after national Youth Congress chief Rajiv Satav informed him about the murder yesterday.

“I was present with Satavji when he called up Rahul Gandhi to inform him about Avijit’s murder. Rahulji wanted to speak to the victim’s family to express his condolence,” Hossain said.

Avijit, a Youth Congress leader in Mogra overseeing the organisation in the Hooghly parliamentary seat, was beaten to death by suspected Trinamul workers yesterday.

While his elder brother Biswajit blamed Trinamul for the murder, police had said Avijit was killed by local youths with whom he picked up a fight over a seat at a barber’s shop.

Today, Avijit’s younger brother Indrajit lodged an FIR at Chinsurah police station naming eight Trinamul workers, including the sabhapati of the local Bandel-Mogra panchayat samiti.

Sabhapati Debabrata Biswas said: “When the murder took place, I was attending a meeting at the zilla parishad office in Chinsurah. There is no question of me being involved in the murder.”
