Garo hills peace rally on March 9

Tura, Feb. 13: The Unified Peace Movement for Garo Hills, an umbrella organisation of civil bodies, today decided to hold a peace rally on March 9 for unity and harmony in the insurgency-hit region.

The meeting also spoke of the need to form a consultative committee to hold negotiations with militant groups.

Headmaster of Don Bosco School and chief organiser of the forum, Rev. Fr Janurias Sangma, said a “peace pledge” can mobilise more people.

NPP leader Roger Benny Sangma called for mass participation in the rally to urge outfits to come forward for talks.

Tengsak Momin, president of the Garo Students’ Union, sought for proactive involvement of church leaders in the movement. An activist of Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People, Bappun Sangma, spoke of a rehabilitation package for surrendered militants.
