Siliguri, Feb. 12: A lady railway contractor and a land broker was gunned down near her home at Hatiadanga off the Eastern Bypass this afternoon.

Police said she was shot from a close range but were yet to find out the motive behind the murder.

Sources said Munu alias Rina Ghosh, 35, was on her way home when the incident took place. She was driving a Maruti Swift. “Around 3.15pm, she was shot from a close range and a bullet hit the right side of her forehead. Rina died on the spot. She was alone in the car,” said S. Rajkumar, deputy commissioner of police (east).

Hatiadanga is in Jalpaiguri district but under the Siliguri metropolitan police. Local people rushed Rina to Siliguri district hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Rina’s husband Pijush, a supplier of construction material, said: “I spoke to her some time before the attack. She told me she was going home. After a few minutes I got a call from a relative who informed me about the murder. I have no idea why she was attacked.”

The police said they were exploring all possible angles.
