English complaint against PC

New Delhi, Feb. 12 (PTI): The Union urban development secretary has alleged that finance minister P. Chidambaram had humiliated him by saying the bureaucrat’s English was incomprehensible and he should speak in Hindi that could be translated.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sudhir Krishna said Chidambaram told him at a meeting that the official should speak in Hindi, which the minister’s officers would translate for him into English.

Krishna said Chidambaram repeated the remark over and over in a “tone and tenor that was expressly humiliating”.

The secretary has requested his minister Kamal Nath to bring the matter to the notice of the Prime Minister. “I do not discuss the communication from secretary to me and vice versa,” Nath said.

The meeting had been called to discuss the release of funds by the finance ministry for JNNURM projects already sanctioned.
