ST papers presented to Asur folk

Siliguri, Feb. 11: Around 40 members of the Asur community from Carron Tea Estate in the Dooars were today handed Scheduled Tribe certificates which would help them enjoy the benefits of various government schemes.

The community that has around 1,000 members is concentrated in the Nagrakata block of the Dooars. The papers were presented to 41 people by Priya Chhetri, the sahakari sabhapati of the Nagrakata panchayat samiti, at an event in the office of the rural body.

“We have been fighting for the past six years for the ST status. It is good that the state government and the (Jalpaiguri) district administration have finally come forward and conferred the ST status on us. The status would help all members of our community, right from the children to youths to senior citizens. They can avail themselves of stipends, employment and various welfare schemes,” said Santosh Asur, the secretary of Asur Samaj Seba Samiti.

Government officials said other members of the Asur community would be given the ST certificates later.
