Death leads to NH jam

Ranchi, Feb. 10: The death of a mukhiya, whose bullet-riddled body was found in a farmland last evening, sparked blockades on the NH-75 in Ranchi district this morning, throwing vehicle movement out of gear for several hours.

Bhola Oroan (50), the mukhiya of Balsokra panchayat, was shot dead yesterday by unidentified assailants in Chanho, around 40km from the district headquarters.

Sources said the family of Oroan started searching for him after a villager noticed Oroan’s motorbike abandoned near a field in the evening. Later, his body was found in a field, about half a kilometre from his residence at Karam Toli. The body bore three bullet injuries — two in the abdomen and one in the neck.

This morning, angry villagers demonstrated with the mukhiya’s body on the Ranchi-Daltonganj highway to protest against the gruesome killing. They put up blockades at Bijupada Chowk and its adjacent places, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and compensation for the bereaved family.

DSP (Khelari) Radha Prem Kishore said the situation could be brought under control around 3.30pm, after over five hours of struggle.

The DPS said preliminary investigations suggested that some village dispute led to the killing of the mukhiya. “We hope to arrest the killers soon.”
