Orphanage death ire

Burdwan, Feb. 10: A 15-year-old girl was found hanging in a private orphanage near Burdwan town this evening, following which 500 people ransacked the building accusing the authorities of torture.

Chhabi Mistri had a nylon rope tied to her neck.

A group of angry villagers punched and slapped Tripti Roy, a retired schoolteacher and the 70-year-old president of the orphanage, Pannamayee Sishu Niketan. Another official, Tapati Mukherjee, was also beaten up.

A police officer said that the mob also broke the signboard of the orphanage and threw chairs and tables out of the office room.

“The villagers beat up the two women officials of the orphanage and ransacked the office room. We went and rescued them,” the officer said.

Santosh Tewari, 10, an orphan and inmate of the home, alleged that he had seen both Roy and Mukherjee and another governing body member of the orphanage tying Chhabi’s neck with a nylon cord and hanging her from an iron beam of the ceiling.

Tewari informed the other villagers. His claim could not be immediately verified.

District superintendent of police S. M. H. Meerza said a murder case had been started.
