Help for differently abled

Barrackpore, Feb. 8: Three hundred differently abled people were given wheelchairs, crutches and other such aids by a Khardah-based citizens’ organisation today.

The programme, attended by Trinamul MPs Subhendu Adhikari and Sougata Roy, as well as chairmen and councillors from neighbouring municipalities, was held for the fifth consecutive year.

The National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped and the local BN Bose Hospital supported the cause.

“We distributed 300 aids. We also distributed 75 disability certificates issued by the BN Bose Hospital,” said Kajal Sinha, president of the Khardah Sanskritik Mancha, which organised the programme near the railway station.

Crutches, wheelchairs, tricycles, sticks for the visually challenged and hearing aids were distributed. Many of these appliances were provided by the National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped.

Tamluk MP Adhikari said: “I am honoured to have come here for such a noble cause.”
