Teenager shot at, missing

A 15-year-old tribal boy was shot at and allegedly abducted by guards of a road construction agency in Ranchi late on Thursday evening, triggering a two-hour blockade on a state highway on Friday afternoon.

Over 500 residents of Gopi Oraon’s native Chatra village, 15km from the district headquarters, demonstrated at Tatisilwai Chowk on Ranchi-Purulia Road from 2pm, demanding quick rescue and suspension of the officer-in-charge of the local police station.

According to protesters, the incident took place around 10pm on Thursday. Gopi and some others had an altercation over “dangerous driving” of earthmovers with guards of the petty firm executing the ring road project under Madhucon Private Limited. One of the guards opened fire and injured Gopi. While the others ran for cover, the guards allegedly whisked away the bleeding teenager.

Gopi’s father Cherevo Oraon informed police. During investigations, a used cartridge was found on the spot. Police are clueless on the boy’s whereabouts.

Tatilsilwai OC B.N. Singh said: “An FIR has been registered. We are trying to contact company officials, but haven’t been successful so far.”
