Lawyers begin strike

Sambalpur, Feb. 5: Lawyers under the aegis of the Central Action Committee of All Western Odisha Bar Associations today started an indefinite hunger strike outside the office of the revenue divisional commissioner in support of their demand for a high court bench in the region.

Committee convener Ashok Dash and four other members — Sureswar Misha, Satya Narayan Panda, Pamod Dash and Santosh Satpathy — sat on an indefinite hunger strike.

At the same time, lawyers here continued to paralyse functioning of the state and central government offices and the judiciary by staging demonstrations outside the establishments.

The committee has decided to stop functioning of banks on February 7, 8, and 10.

Students of Sambalpur University have extended support to the ongoing agitation of the lawyers and have decided to boycott classes on February 10.
