Md. Sp.’s superb comeback

Calcutta: The rub of the green went in Mohammedan Sporting’s favour as they came back from behind to earn a fine 2-1 win over Dhanmondi Club in Sunday’s IFA Shield Group II encounter, at the Salt Lake Stadium.

Being a transformed side in the second session with Ashim Biswas and Joshimar on target after Sony Nordy gave the Bangladesh outfit the lead, Mohammedan Sporting are virtually through to the semi-finals.

Things weren’t looking good at all for them as Sanjoy Sen’s men just couldn’t match the speed and skills of their counterparts, especially since Sony Nordy — Bangladesh’s highest paid footballer — gave his team the lead with a scorching long-ranger.

Also, early in the second half, Joshimar failed to score off a penalty.

Mohammedan Sporting finally equalised in the 56th minute through an awesome side-volley from Ashim off a Penn Orji corner.

Minutes before the final whistle came the winning goal. A gross defensive error from fullback Mohammed Nasiruddin allowed Joshimar to slot the ball home past the advancing goalie, leaving Dhanmondi in a state of shock.
