KLO leader shot dead in Assam

Kokrajhar, Feb. 2: Brindaban Rajbangshi, a senior cadre of Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), who carried a cash reward of Rs 3 lakh on his head, was gunned down last evening in Kokrajhar district.

Brindaban was killed in a joint operation of the Assam police and Indian army. He was a self-styled commander of the KLO.

Rajbangshi, a resident of Mainatoli village in Fakiragram area of Assam, was allegedly involved in the killing of G. Pathak, an engineer of the state agriculture department of Assam, around two years back.

Yesterday, police and the army acted on a tip-off and raided the area. While Brindaban was killed, two other KLO militants fled the spot.

“There was information that Brindaban was assigned with the task to extort money from businessmen of Dhubri and the adjoining areas of Alipurduar and Cooch Behar. A pistol, live ammunitions, grenades, some documents, two SIM cards and currency notes of Myanmar were found on him,” an intelligence official said.

“His activities were in Assam and he was not involved in any crime by the KLO in north Bengal,” the official said.
