Naziya wins triple crown

Guwahati, Feb 2: Naziya Ahmed annexed triple crown in the 16th India Club All-Assam Open Tennis Championship that concluded at the India Club courts here today.

She won the under-14 and under-18 girls’ singles defeating Janashree Saikia and then partnered Janashree to lift the under-18 girls’ doubles trophy, defeating Eva Raj Sah and Annie Thaosen 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

In the singles finals, Naziya won 6-3, 6-4 for the under-14 champion’s title and 6-4, 7-5 in the under-18 event.

Amlan Barua also bagged double crowns, winning the under-18 boys’ singles and doubles titles.

In the singles final, he prevailed over Ronit Bora 6-1, 6-2 and later on, teamed up with Jugal Barua to win the doubles title defeating Ankit Kashyap and Rounak Bora 6-3, 6-1. Ronit Bora won the under-14 boys’ singles getting the better of Jishnu Barua 6-2, 6-2.

Kritanta Sarma came back from a set behind to beat Anuranan Choudhury 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 for the under-12 boys’ singles title. In the veteran men’s doubles events, Rishi Raj Das and Nabarun Saikia won the above-35 title, edging past Anupam Choudhury and Gaurav Chowdhury 9-8, while Anupam Choudhury and Nabarun Saikia beat Sankar Dutta Lahkar and Shyamanga Rajkhowa 8-2 for the above-50 crown.

Wushu team: The Wushu Association of Assam named a 25-member contingent for the 22nd Senior National Wushu Championship at SMS Stadium, Jaipur, from February 6 to 10.
