Rape victim rescued

Nagaon, Feb. 1: A 24-year-old mentally challenged woman, who was allegedly gangraped, was rescued by Nagaon police this morning.

The woman, who stayed at Nagaon State Home, had been missing from her quarters since January 30.

Nagaon additional superintendent of police (headquarters) Hitesh Rai said this morning, some people reported that a woman was found wandering along the bank of the Kolong river.

“She was ill when we found her. We reported the matter immediately to the state home authorities and admitted her to the civil hospital for treatment,” Rai said.

A state home source today said she hails from near Jalukbari area in Guwahati and has been residing at the home since 1998.

“In 2007, 2009 and 2011 she had escaped from the state home, but the authorities had rescued her with the help of the local residents. When her condition deteriorated she was sent to Ashadeep in Guwahati for treatment and she returned after her health improved,” the source added.

The police said the woman had been gangraped.
