Bus turns turtle, 1 killed

One person was killed and 12 more were injured on Friday in a bus mishap blamed on rash driving and potholes.

The bus, with 45 passengers on board, was heading to Jamshedpur from Bada Ashti in Ghurabandha block when it overturned at Parulia village after hitting a rough patch on Ghurabandha-Mosabani Road, about 45km from Jamshedpur, around 8.30am. The front axle of the bus broke, causing the driver to lose control over the vehicle. Cleaner of the bus Somai Soren (24) died on the spot.

Local villagers, along with CRPF jawans from the camp of 193rd battalion, rescued the injured, including two women and a 10-year-old boy, and rushed them to ICC Hospital at Mosabani in Ghatshila sub-division. Later, six of them, who had sustained serious injuries, were referred to MGM Medical College and Hospital in Sakchi.

Superintendent of police (rural) Shailendra Kumar Sinha said: “The front axle of the bus came apart because of the road’s poor condition. The vehicle went off balance and overturned. The driver has been detained. He will be arrested if found guilty of diving recklessly.”

One of the victims, Fanibhushan Mahto, said the driver sped up whenever he found a smooth stretch of road. “Despite objections by some passengers, he did not listen and picked up speed. The bus then suddenly hit a potholed stretch and the axle broke,” narrated Mahto.

In another incident, a tourist bus caught fire while negotiating Hata-Tata Road in Potka early in the morning. SP (rural) Shailendra Kumar Sinha said a short circuit caused the fire in the Purulia-bound vehicle that was coming from Odisha. Although the bus was gutted to some extent, no one was injured.
