Bronze for state in roll ball national

A splendid show in league stage helped Jharkhand Under-17 boys clinch a bronze medal at the 52nd School National Roll Ball Championship held at Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium in Pune from January 19 to 23.

Jharkhand started its league campaign in the Under-17 boys’ category by routing Madhya Pradesh 8-0, before thrashing Jammu and Kashmir 6-0.

The state also posted a 3-0 win over Chandigarh. However, the state boys lost 3-6 in a league tie to Chhattisgarh, before getting beaten 4-8 in the semi-final by the same side.

In the battle for the third place, Jharkhand beat Kerala 6-0 to slot home the bronze.

Ujjair Farhan, Onkar Chand, Dev Kumar, Jeet Kumar, Monu Gupta, Srikant Sahu, Nirbhay Gupta and Karan Sandhu were part of the bronze-winning contingent.

Narendera Kumar and Chadeshwar Sahu accompanied the team as coach and manager, respectively.

Team manager Sahu expressed joy over the boys’ performance. “The boys performed exceptionally well at the league stage. But for the loss in the semis, we would have clinched the title. However, we are happy to have returned with a bronze medal,” said Sahu, also the secretary general of Jharkhand Roll Ball Association.

State body president Manoj Yadav and Tata Steel sports department senior manager Charles Borromeo also congratulated the outfit.

Notably, Tata Steel sports department has let out its court at JRD Tata Sports Complex to the state roll ball outfit for training youngsters.

Sahu said several promising talents hone their skills under experienced mentors at the facility every evening.

“We are happy that roll ball is slowly but steadily gaining popularity in Jamshedpur. We have endeavours to spread the game to other parts of Jharkhand,” he added.

The state roll ball outfit had also fielded a girls’ team in the Under–17 age group and a boys’ squad in the Under-14 category. Both teams drew a blank in the championship.
