Teen job hopeful hangs self

A 17-year-old girl from West Singhbhum, staying in a Ranchi lodge and preparing for competitive examinations, was found hanging in the shower on Tuesday afternoon.

Police suspect the incident, which took place at Ganguly Lodge in Lalpur close to Hotel Landmark, to be a case of suicide based on circumstantial evidence.

Although they are still not certain what prompted Priyanka Pradhan’s death wish, the incident followed a spat with her uncle over leaving the city and returning home.

According to preliminary investigations, around 2pm a roommate spotted Priyanka’s body hanging in one of the bathrooms; her dupatta being her noose.

Owner of the lodge, advocate Madhusudan Ganguly, was contacted who in turn informed police.

“I received a call around 2.30pm and rushed to the lodge. Police have not recovered any suicide note. Hence, the reason behind the suicide has not been ascertained yet. The other girls could not offer clues either,” Ganguly said.

Inspector of Lalpur circle A.K. Jha said they had registered a case of unnatural death and sent the body to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences for post-mortem. The report is yet to come.

“The girl hails from Nua village in Goelkera police station area of West Singhbhum district. She was preparing for competitive examinations and taking physics and chemistry tuitions. We have informed her father A. Pradhan,” Jha said.

He hinted that Priyanka was unhappy about staying in the city, away from her family and friends. “Her uncle had come this morning and she wanted to go back with him, but he refused. She was found dead soon thereafter,” he said.

The lodge in Lalpur where Priyanka was put up houses 20 other girl students.
