Rhinos go past Waveriders 1-0

Ranchi: Ashley Jackson guided Ranchi Rhinos to a 1-0 victory over Delhi Waveriders, in their second outing of the Hero Hockey India League, here on Monday.

Jackson sounded the board in the dying minutes to ensure full points for Rhinos.

Custodian Francisco Cortes, who won the Man-of-the-Match award, came up with three stupendous saves, including two back-to-back saves, to thwart Waveriders from scoring as the match was deadlocked till the last minutes before the final hooter.

In the evenly contested match, Rhinos got two penalty corners while the Waveriders failed on to convert from all the three they earned.

On Sunday, however, the Rhinos had ended up in the losing side, when Uttar Pradesh Wizards came from behind to stun them 3-2 in their first match of the league.

The defending champions had taken the lead in the fourth minute through their star striker Mandeep Singh.

The Rhinos played an aggressive game and controlled the proceedings in the early part of the match. But Uttar Pradesh Wizards equalised in the 10th minute through Nikkin Thimmaiah.

In Mohali, on Sunday, Jaypee Punjab Warriors dished out a commendable performance to thrash Dabur Mumbai Magicians 5-3 to register their first win in the tournament.
