Speeding bus kills SSKM nurse

A 50-year-old nurse was run over by a speeding minibus on the road in front of SSKM Hospital on Thursday afternoon.

Sandhya Maity, sister-in-charge at the Victoria Ward of SSKM, was crossing Harish Mukherjee Road around 2.30pm when a Howrah-Kalitala minibus hit her. Maity was caught under the wheels and dragged for a few feet.

She was rushed to the emergency unit of SSKM where she was declared dead on arrival.

Maity, who was single according to her colleagues, hailed from Contai, East Midnapore. She had joined SSKM in 1990 and lived in the Carmichael Hostel.

“The bus has been impounded but the driver is absconding,” said an officer of Bhowanipore police station.

Following the accident, a group of SSKM nurses staged a roadblock around 3.30pm in front of the emergency gate demanding round-the-clock police vigil.

The blockade was lifted after police officers assured them of assistance.

Hashish haul

nCousins Birodh Budha and Surya Prasad from Nepal were arrested with 8kg of hashish worth Rs 8 lakh at Calcutta airport on Thursday. The duo were to fly to Kunming, China. The hashish was in a hidden chamber of one of their bags. They came to the city by road, exposing security chinks.

Trains disrupted

Train services in the Howrah-Burdwan line was suspended from 6.20pm to 7.30pm because of a signal snag.

Ganja arrest

Beauty Chowdhury, 32, and two others were arrested from Muktapukur in Titagarh in North 24-Parganas early on Thursday for transporting ganja. Police seized 10kg of ganja from them.
