BSF jawan fires

Balurghat, Jan. 22: A BSF constable allegedly opened fire on a Trinamul Congress march after entering into a scuffle with one of the processionists in the border town of Hili this evening.

Nobody was hurt in the firing. The BSF said a probe would be conducted and if Sunny Dhama, 26, was found guilty, action would be taken.

Kalian Kundu, the sahakari sabhadhipati of the Trinamul-run South Dinajpur zilla parishad, said the jawan was drunk and he had stopped a motorcyclist at the tail-end of the march and asked for the two-wheeler’s keys. “Our worker refused to give the keys and there was a heated exchange of words between the constable and those taking part in the procession. The constable whipped out his revolver and fired a round. Our workers started running helter-skleter.”

Police intervened and brought the situation under control.
