Datsun gets ready to Go

Racing ahead

New Delhi, Jan. 19: Nissan will exhibit two models of its economy brand Datsun, including a multi-purpose vehicle, at the Delhi auto expo next month.

The Japanese auto major has revived the Datsun brand after 32 years to provide what the company says is an economical and stylish alternative.

Carlos Ghosn, Nissan Motor president and CEO, said the company wanted to introduce a slew of low cost cars under the Datsun brand to woo first-time buyers graduating from two-wheelers.

“We will introduce low cost cars priced below Rs 3 lakh under the Datsun brand. I am sure that our target market which includes fresh out of college youngsters will buy our cars,” said Ghosn.

Nissan will display Datsun’s Go+ MPV and the Go hatchback. The company had unveiled the Go hatchback last year during the relaunch of the Datsun brand. A formal launch is planned for the expo. Nissan will start selling the car later this year, at a price of less than Rs 4 lakh.

The five-door hatchback will compete with the Maruti Suzuki A-Star and the Hyundai i10. Nissan expects to sell around 2.5 lakh Datsun cars in various segments by 2016.

The Go+ MPV is likely to compete with the Maruti Ertiga and the Toyota Innova, but Nissan will project it as a more affordable option with similar specs. Sources in the company said the Go+ could be potentially priced between Rs 5.5 lakh and Rs 6.5 lakh.

Nissan will also showcase a variety of body kits for the two cars, giving an idea to customers about the different ways the car can be customised.

Datsun will also unveil a concept car at the auto expo this year. Though the company is keeping the details, design and specs of the car under wraps, industry insiders said the concept would showcase styles to be incorporated in the future.

“Created to appeal to the new generation, the new concept is distinctive and stylish, and a step forward in terms of product allure in the segment. At the same time it offers all the features required by the aspirational Datsun customers,” the company spokesperson said.

Nissan will also showcase its brand new 2014 Sunny sedan at the event.
