Dawoodi Bohra leader dies

Jan. 17: Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb, the 52nd spiritual leader of the million-strong Dawoodi Bohra population, died on Friday morning in Mumbai.

He passed away a few weeks short of his 103rd birthday, and was the oldest Syedna in the history of that office.

The Syedna held the second longest tenure in office (49 years) across his 51 predecessors.

The Syedna was a man of history who lived in the future. He was known to be a spiritual leader who interpreted the wisdom of the ages for a rapidly modernising world without diluting the essence of the religion.

He also worked tirelessly for the mainstreaming of the Dawoodi Bohra community.

His 70-year-old son Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, who has been announced as his successor, will lead the funeral namaaz at Saifee Masjid at Bhendi Bazaar on Saturday.
