Lady attacked, robbed

A youth hired by a 75-year-old woman to clean the backyard of her house allegedly attacked and robbed her on Monday afternoon.

Monika Kriti, 75, who lives with grandson Arpan at K-110 Kandahari Bosepara in Bansdroni, was alone at home when the incident occurred.

Police sources said the lady had hired a youth to clean the garden in the backyard of her house that was overgrown with weeds.

“When the youth asked for money after completing the work, the woman told him to come back the next morning and collect the money from her grandson. The youth then requested her for a glass of water,” said an officer of Bansdroni police station.

Kriti went inside the house to fetch water, asking the youth to wait outside the door. While the lady was inside, the youth allegedly attacked her.

“The youth apparently tried to strangulate her with a towel. The elderly woman passed out and fell down. The youth, apparently thinking she had died, took away two pairs of bangles, one pair of gold earrings, two gold and silver rings and some household articles,” the officer added.

Kriti lay unconscious for at least three hours, till grandson Arpan, who drives a pool car, returned home. He sprinkled water on her to bring her back to senses and then took her to hospital.

The woman and her grandson lodged a police complaint on Tuesday. A case has been started under Section 394 of the Indian Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery.

Based on the description provided by the woman, police have prepared a sketch of the accused but are yet to track him down.
