Infiltrators crowd jails

Durgapur, Jan. 14: Correctional administration minister H.A. Safwi today said Bangladesh was not taking back thousands of jailed infiltrators whose terms have ended.

The minister said there was a space crunch in the jails because of the 3,500-odd Bangladeshi prisoners. Safwi added that the Bengal government was having to bear the expenses of the prisoners’ food and other basic amenities.

“They have become a problem for us as their country is not taking them back. We have repeatedly requested the Bangladesh high commission to make arrangements for their return as they have completed their jail terms,” Safwi said.

A Bangladesh high commission official said: “We do not accept that all of these people are Bangladeshi nationals, as claimed by India. If India sends us the details of these prisoners, we can look into it.”
