Chess tourney on R-Day

Jamshedpur, Jan 11: Chess enthusiasts from the steel city can look forward to trying their luck at a tournament this Republic Day.

Organised by Kadma Chess Club, the tie will be organised at Bhetia Park. The tourney is open to school and college students and employees of industries in an around Jamshedpur. Those learning chess at various centres around the city can also participate.

“We are expecting over 100 entries. Cash prizes will be awarded to top 10 players and the winner and runner-up will get champion trophies. We are also handing over trophies to top two players (boys and girls),” said Harjeet Singh, general secretary of the club, which is an affiliated unit of East Singhbhum District Chess Association.

While the winner of the tournament will walk home with Rs 2,100, the runner-up will receive Rs 1,500. While players bagging the third and fourth spots will get Rs 1,000 and Rs 700, respectively, Those finishing fifth and sixth will receive Rs 500 and Rs 300, respectively.

The tournament, conducted in 6 rounds, will start at 8am and the prize distribution is scheduled at 4.30pm.

Singh added that participants would have to shell out Rs 250 as entry fee and lunch would be provided.
