Gaur panic in village, 1 injured

Alipurduar, Jan. 10: One person was injured while trying to flee from one of the five gaur which had come out of the Chilapata forest and entered a village near here this morning.

Bimal Roy, a resident of Uttar Chakoakheti village, around 20km from here, said: “Around 8am today, we heard a loud noise. When we went out to see, we saw five gaur. We immediately informed the forest staff of Chilapata. By the time they came, two animals had returned to the forest, while three were still roaming around.”

One of the gaur entered a house and a family member was injured when he fell on the ground while trying to escape.

He was admitted to Baburhat health centre, about 5km from the village.

Another gaur was injured after it hit a brick wall and damaged a water pump.

Rajendra Jakhar, the divisional forest officer of Jaldapara wildlife division, said: “Two of the three gaur have been tranquillised and our staff members are taking care of the third one which has suffered some injuries.”
