College girl suicide bid

Malda, Jan. 8: A college girl about to be married in February today jumped off the roof of her hostel building after her parents scolded her on finding her with her boyfriend.

The girl, 21 years old and a third-year student, landed in Malda Medical College and Hospital with a broken leg.

The girl’s wedding had been fixed with a schoolteacher in Farakka, Murshidabad. Seeing the girl with her boyfriend, the parents were incensed. Police said the woman attempted suicide after her parents chided her and her boyfriend.

The police said the woman is from a village in Englishbazar block and had been staying in the hostel for the past three years.

Her father works for the postal department and is posted in Farakka and her mother is a homemaker.

“The student’s parents had fixed her marriage with a schoolteacher in Farakka. It was supposed to be held in February. But she was in a relationship with a youth, also from Englishbazar,” said a police officer.

“The girl had reportedly told her parents about the relationship and that she was not ready to marry the teacher,” the officer said.

Today around 8am, the woman’s parents went to her hostel to take her home. When they reached the hostel entrance, they saw their daughter talking to her boyfriend.

“Seeing this, the woman’s father started shouting at the youth and chided him. He also reprimanded his daughter for continuing the relationship with the youth although her marriage had been fixed to somebody else,” said another boarder.

The youth left after he was shouted at and the girl took her parents to her hostel room. She asked them to wait for sometime, went to the terrace and jumped off. Hearing a loud thud, the woman’s parents and other boarders rushed out to find the woman lying in a pool of blood.

“We knew about her relationship with the local youth and that is why we had fixed her marriage to a teacher next month. Today, we had gone to the hostel to bring our daughter home. I scolded the youth when I saw him with my daughter near the hostel. I scolded her too. But I never thought that she would try to commit suicide because of that,” said the father.

Doctors at the hospital said the girl had head and chest injuries and she had fractured her left leg.

Hostel superintendent Mumtaz Banu said: “The student’s parents had applied for her leave and we had sanctioned it. Today, they were supposed to take her home.”
