New Delhi, Jan. 8: German car maker Mercedes Benz today introduced a new version of its S-Class luxury sedan for Rs 1.57 crore.

“We are launching the all new S-Class in India just three months after its global launch in October last year, following up on eight products we launched in 2013 here,” Eberhard H. Kern, managing director and chief executive of Mercedes Benz India Private Limited, said.

Mercedes is currently importing the car and plans to locally assemble it later.

The S-Class comes with a 4.6 litre V8 engine and has a top speed of 250 km per hour.

Mercedes has sold half a million units of the car, worldwide, and 3,500 in India.

Kern said the biggest chunk of buyers in India is from smaller cities and not metros.

“Around 55 per cent of our sales are generating from smaller cities. Smaller cities and towns such as Surat witnessed bulk sales. We will be opening outlets in cities such as Bhubaneswar and Bhopal as well,” said Kern.

He observed that the number of women buyers of luxury cars in India had gone up in the last one year. Women have shown a preference for sportier cars.

“The A class has attracted a large number of women buyers. The sporty look of the model has been a hit. They prefer cars in colours such as red and white, but more than the colour it is the styling and comfort of the car that matters to them,” Kern said.

The A-class, a luxury hatchback launched in May last year, is priced in the range of Rs 23 lakh to Rs 25 lakh.
