Spycam in washroom

The owner of a Bhowanipore paying guest facility was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly installing a spy camera in a washroom used by girls staying there.

An 18-year-old girl alleged in her complaint that Harinder Singh, 49, of Rammohan Dutta Road had been watching her through a spycam placed in the washroom on the first floor of the building. The camera was apparently connected to his laptop, police said.

“We raided the house and found the camera hidden behind a mirror next to a window in the washroom. A further search revealed that Singh monitored the camera through his laptop,” said an officer of Bhowanipore police station.

After his arrest, the man admitted to his crime and said he had been indulging in this voyeuristic act for months.

Singh was charged with voyeurism under IPC section 354C that could land him in jail for three years.

The police found that Singh and his wife had been running the paying guest business over the past few years.

The wife was apparently unaware of the camera.

“They would let out the rooms only to girls who come from the districts or other cities to pursue higher studies. At present, they have six to seven tenants. Some of them had been using the washroom fitted with the hidden camera,” said a senior police officer.

Police seized the camera but did not find any video or stills stored in the laptop.
