Hearing on fake encounter

Kokrajhar, Jan. 4: The hearing on the killing of two school students — Jeremiya Narzary and Pranjit Narzary — in an alleged fake encounter at Raidangbari under Runikhata police station in Chirang district on December 11 and college student Biswajit Basumatary at Kumarsali village under Bijni police station on December 8, will be held on Tuesday at the deputy commissioner’s office, Kajalgaon.

The one-man inquiry committee, headed by V.B. Pyarelal, additional chief secretary to the government of Assam, will inquire into the killing of the two school students on December 11 and the college student on December 8.

“A hearing will be held on January 7 from noon to 2.30pm in the deputy commissioner’s office, Kajalgaon. The persons or organisations who have knowledge of the incident are requested by the district magistrate, Chirang, to give evidence or written statement on the same,” said a statement.

The victims, Jeremiya Narzary and Pranjit Narzary, who are from the same family, were students in Classes X and VI. A student of Class VII, Nikodim Narzary was seriously injured in the encounter and is undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

Police have claimed that the deceased were members of the Songbijit faction of the NDFB and were “killed” in an encounter with a joint team of the police and the army at Raidangbari under Runikhata police station, around 239km from Guwahati.

The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has also directed the chief secretary to conduct a proper inquiry into the Chirang “fake” encounter case.
