VBU teachers meet

Dhanbad, Jan. 4: The newly elected executive committee of Vinoba Bhave University Teachers Association held its first high-level meeting today at SSLNT Women’s College.

At the meeting, chaired by president Balbir Singh Sidhu, members stressed on the need to improve working conditions of teaching staff in 18 constituent colleges of the varsity spread across five districts — Dhanbad, Bokaro, Giridih, Hazaribagh and Ramgarh. Talks were also held on ways to better academic atmosphere and improve infrastructure.

Of the 28 executive members, 23 attended the meeting.

Speaking on the issues taken up, associate professor of English at Dhanbad’s PN Roy College Himanshu Shekhar Chowdhary said besides improvement in academic atmosphere, members decided to take steps to make all the 18 colleges’ libraries functional.

“The major demands included ensuring that they receive salaries on the month’s first working day, fixing pay according to the 6th pay commission recommendations and promotion of teachers appointed in 1996,” he said.

Promotion to all teachers, pending increments, separation of teaching staff at intermediate colleges from those at degree colleges and facilities enjoyed by teachers of other universities were also in the list of demands.

The elections for the executive committee were held in the second week of December.
