Father, brother throttle girl

Borjhar, Nov. 10: Marami Khatoon, 15, was allegedly strangulated to death by her father and elder brother at Kaplabari village in Assam’s Nalbari district last night.

Nalbari superintendent of police P.R. Kar told The Telegraph over phone today that the girl was killed after she rejected her father’s proposal to marry a boy next month. He said the girl was in love with another boy — a fact that her father opposed.

Marami was a Class IX student at Kaplabari Madrassa.

“An advocate residing near the victim’s house informed police about the incident today after hearing heated arguments last night. We rushed to the spot and arrested the father, Zulhaj Ali, and brother Babul Ali from their home,” Kar said.

He said the police exhumed her body, which was buried in the courtyard of the house, in the presence of a magistrate. He said the post-mortem has been conducted.

“Marami went to a function last night with her boyfriend. On her return, her father and brother allegedly tortured her and strangulated her to death. The father allegedly tried to mislead the police by blaming the boyfriend,” a source said.

“It is a heinous crime. We will try our best to file charge-sheets against the accused at the earliest,” Kar said.

Angry Kaplabari villagers have demanded capital punishment for the accused and said the trial must be conducted at a fast-track court.
