City flyover assault on college girl

Calcutta, Sept. 7: A college girl returning home with her fiancÚ after Puja shopping was verbally abused and assaulted by bikers outside the police training school at Hastings around 7.30 last night.

The girl, riding pillion on her fiancÚ’s motorbike, almost fell off after one of the three youths on the three-wheeler that gave them chase on the AJC Bose Road flyover hit her on her back with a helmet.

Alerted by her cries for help, policemen manning traffic at the crossing of Belvedere Road and AJC Bose Road, 30 metres away, arrested the three youths and impounded their bike.

The brazen assault in the middle of peak-hour traffic showed yet again how fearless the tease in the city had become.

“I had gone to Gariahat market for shopping with my fiancÚ. When we reached Park Circus and were about to take the AJC Bose Road flyover, three youths on a bike drove past and started zigzagging. I told my fiancÚ to drive cautiously,” said the girl, a Howrah resident.

“We had to stop because the signal at the crossing had turned red. One of the bikers hit me on the back with his helmet. I almost fell off,” the girl said.

“The three youths on the bike stopped beside ours. One of the two riding pillion tried to hit me again with his helmet. I screamed and asked my fiancÚ to drive away but he could not because the signal was still red,” she added.

The girl, whose father is a trader, alleged that the youths passed lewd remarks at her.

“They were speaking in Hindi. They made obscene gestures and passed lewd remarks. I saw policemen standing at the crossing and shouted for help.”

Two traffic policemen ran to the spot and caught the trio.

“I lodged a complaint at Hastings police station. I had to undergo some tests at SSKM Hospital as I was feeling a pain in my back,” the girl said.

The three accused were identified as Sheikh Sabbar, Masud Khan and Mohammad Zahid, small-time traders in the port area. The trio were produced in court and remanded in judicial custody till September 13.

“Tests showed that they were drunk,” an officer of Hastings police station said. “We have charged them with molestation and causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.”
