Manipur bag top team title

Imphal, Aug. 9: Manipur took the overall team champion’s title, finishing with 47 points in the Sub-Junior National Judo Championship, 2013-14, which concluded at Khuman Lampak indoor stadium today.

The hosts bagged the girls’ team champion’s title, while the Mizoram girls took the runners-up title.

In the boys’ category, Mizoram got the team champion’s title while Delhi settled for the runners-up title.

Uttarakhand judoka Unnati Sharma and Haryana judoka Nitin were named the Best Girl and Best Boy judokas in the championship.

The Judo Federation of India slapped a life ban on West Bengal coach Priyanjan Das Gupta in view of his unethical behaviour. Dasgupta reportedly hit and slapped judoka Payel Sengupta on her failure to bag a gold and getting a silver instead.

The Judo Federation of India’s secretary, Manmohan Jaiswal, later pulled up the West Bengal coach.

Earlier, in the final bout of the sub-junior girls’ 44kg bout of the under-15 category, N. Vijitha of Kerala beat Payel Sengupta of West Bengal for the gold and Th. Chaoba Devi of Manipur and Lunmawai of Mizoram settled for the bronze medals. In the sub-junior boys’ 50kg bout, Shubham of Delhi defeated Pankaj Das of Assam to settle for the gold while W. Jiken Singh of Manipur and Mukul Bhatt of Uttarakhand took the bronze medals. Assam finished with a silver and bronze medal in the championship.

Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh gave away the prizes.

Athletics for kids: The Athletics Association of Manipur, under the initiative of the International Association of Athletics Federation, will launch the IAAF Kids Athletics programme for boys and girls between seven and 12 years of age in the state.
