One killed in train mishap

Guwahati; July 16: A person was killed and four others, including a one-year-old, were injured when a goods train hit them at Gandhibasti in the city while they were trying to cross the rail tracks around 9.15pm today.

Sources said the persons were coming from Nagaon to Guwahati on the Inter-city Express. They got off at the level-crossing when the train slowed down.

When they tried to cross the rail tracks, a goods train, coming from the opposite direction, hit them, killing one of them on the spot.

“One was brought dead to the hospital. Treatment of the others is on,” said an officer of New Guwahati Government Railway Police.

Sources said they all belong to the same family and came from Nagaon to visit one of their relatives at Hijubari here.

People gathered at the spot contacted police and 108 service. After some time the 108 vehicle arrived and rushed the injured persons to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

“When I arrived at the place I saw a woman crying, holding a baby. When I asked what happened she pointed to the other injured person and the body lying on the ground,” said an eyewitness.

“It was not right to get down from the train here, instead of at the station. But very often people have to wait for a long time here to let trains pass,” said another bystander.

GMCH superintendent Ramen Talukdar said the condition of one of the injured was critical and the child was stable.
