GSA meet from July 7

Guwahati, June 30: The Guwahati Sports Association is going to kickoff its football season with the NN Bhattacharya invitation tournament at Nehru Stadium from July 7 and hopes to wind up the season by mid-October.

Confirming this, GSA general secretary Ibocha Singh today told The Telegraph that the fixture committee for the NN Bhattacharya meet will meet on July 3 to finalise the schedule for the annual season-opener knockout tournament.

He said a couple of new outfits, such as Ganga Sports Club and Kamrupa Sports Club, are likely to participate in the tournament this time.

The tournament involves teams affiliated only to the GSA, including Super League and first division league outfits.

Singh said the Super League and the first division league will commence by August 3 and matches would be held simultaneously on both turfs of Nehru Stadium.

The GSA has also proposed to complete the Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy tournament before Durga Puja in order to ensure that some of the I-League outfits can also could participate in the tournament.

The AIFF I-League committee has decided to retain the old format of the national league and hold it from October instead of the earlier commencement date of August.

“We will invite I-League clubs like Shillong Lajong FC, Rangdajied United and one or two from Calcutta. Therefore, we will have to complete the tournament before the I-League gets under way,” Singh said.
