Paresh Barua makes appeal

Guwahati, Feb. 24: Ulfa leader Paresh Barua today said he has not created any faction in the outfit and appealed to the media not to identify the organisation with him.

In a statement emailed to media here, Barua clarified that he was not the head of Ulfa and was only a fellow official. “I cannot represent the organisation and instead Ulfa carries our identity. Our chairman, Abhijit Asom, is our head and we all function as per his directives,” Barua said.

The Ulfa group, which is yet to come for dialogue is referred to in the media as the Paresh Barua-led faction since the group led by Arabinda Rajkhowa came overground in 2010 to hold talks with the government.

The Rajkhowa-led group has already started dialogue with New Delhi.

“Neither the chairman nor me has set any new aims, objectives, ideologies or policy but are committed to the one which were set when the organisation was born. We are just taking forward our old aims and objectives and fight for sovereignty of Assam. Hence, I appeal to the media persons not to attach my name while identifying Ulfa,” the email said.
