Nagaon, Feb. 15: The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council plans to upgrade 10 middle English schools in the district to smart educational institutions with special audio-visual classrooms. With this, the number of such schools in the district will increase to 110.
Sarva Siksha Abhijan recently approved the council’s smart school proposal and entrusted it with the responsibility of selecting schools for upgrade.
Once the schools are selected, the relevant infrastructure would be set up and the resource persons who will impart the audio-visual classes will be trained.
The smart school concept was launched in 2003 in 20 ME schools in the hill district by introducing audio-visual classrooms. Another 80 such schools were upgraded during the past 10 years.
Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council executive member (education) Tuliram Ranghang said unavoidable problems like lack of electricity in some school stood in the way of their selection despite potential and scope.
“Our mission is to install audio-visual facility in all the 185 ME schools in Karbi Anglong. Discussions are on with Dispur to opt for power generators so that students of remote areas can get a taste of quality education,” he said.
Ranghang said a list of the proposed 10 schools would be prepared within the next one week and that would finally be submitted to Dispur.
The smart school concept covers 32 hard spots (comparatively tough chapters or lessons or items) in English, mathematics and science for students of Class V to class VIII. Four computers with UPS, printers and big LCD monitors are installed in a special room in such a school. The teachers are trained to operate the system and imparted basic training about the items in the audio-visual CDs provided with the system.
“Students of each of the three classes are called to the special classroom once a day where the concerned teacher explains the lessons using the audio-visual system. Some problems, like low number of computers or frequent power cuts, stand in the way of completing a class. If more computers are given or a generator is installed, the audio-visual classes can be conducted smoothly and make e-learning a success in rural schools,” said Umswai ME schoolteacher Ram Charan Bordoloi.
