No. 3 spot works best for me: Virat

Mohali: Virat Kohli is a happy man batting at No.3 in the Indian line-up. Back in form after playing a Man of the Match-winning innings in Ranchi, the star batsman said he enjoys the pressure and likes to finish off games.

On the eve of the fourth one-dayer, in Mohali, Virat said at the media conference that during the rough patch, he never lost his composure.

The following are excerpts

Whether India’s batting will be tested if the ball swings in Mohali

If you don’t do well even in two games, you are tested in the third anyway, so we don’t think about that so much before a match. We try to prepare as best as we can. Everyone goes into the match wanting to score runs and not to fail. Now that we have done well in the last two games as a batting unit, we hope to continue the same.

If he is relieved after getting back among runs

To be honest, I wasn’t feeling the same way as many people were feeling about my form. No one can keep scoring consistently for a period of over 16 months so... It is fine. You just got to keep yourself calm and composed at that point of time. It was a bit annoying for me because I was not getting out making too many mistakes. If you get frustrated, you tend to extend the lean phase that you are going through. You’ve got to be positive, which I was and I am glad I was able to come out with that knock in the last game.

The ideal batting slot for him

No 3. has been working fine for me… I wouldn’t know too much about the lower order because I haven’t batted too much there. At No.3, I like the pressure situation going in. And I like to finish off games as well… So as of now, No. 3 is the position that works best for me.

Mohali being Yuvraj’s home ground

He is always really glad to be here. Obviously, MS was very happy when he was in Ranchi because it was the first game there. We saw the kind of the stadium they have built and so it was a proud moment for him. Whenever Yuvi plays in this ground, he feels the crowd backs him totally, so…

This England team as an opponent

They have got a few young players in the side. It obviously takes a bit of time for them to come in and start winning games. I am sure when they gain a bit more experience they will be match-winners for their team.

On whether England resting some key players dilutes the significance of the series

I don’t think so… That’s their personal choice. It wasn’t meant to be like that. We were ready to play the full Test team that played here, so we prepared like that.

Mohali wicket

It’s always been a lively wicket. It has always been a wicket with a hard surface and a little bit of grass on it. It always helps the bowler a bit early on, and with the two new balls coming in, it is going to be even more challenging for the top order batsmen. But it’s the sort of wicket where you can get your eye in and then you can play shots at will.

Wednesday’s game being an opportunity to wrap up the series

We are all aware of it... This next game is really very important. As I said, we have to step up and put up a consistent show. As you said, it’s not certain that we can have a game in Dharamsala, so the Mohali match becomes all the more important.

Whether they are treating it as the last game of the series

We have to… We have to treat every game like that. After you lose the first game in the series, you have to treat every game with that sort of a mind set.
