Suicide

Kokrajhar/Guwahati, Jan. 22: A young housewife, who was allegedly raped by a CRPF jawan on Monday, committed suicide by hanging herself at her home at Nepalpara village in Chirang district today.

A police source said the victim, who was in her early twenties, committed suicide this afternoon. The police said some villagers claimed that she had an extramarital affair with the CRPF jawan and both of them were caught in a compromising position yesterday.

The source said the villagers had assaulted the couple though the jawan, identified as B. Jai Bhai of the CRPFís 86th battalion, fled. The victim may have ended her life because of the humiliation she was subjected to, an angle that was now being investigated. The body has been sent for autopsy, which could reveal if she was raped.
