Bullets fly on wheels

Jan. 18: A person was shot dead and two others suffered bullet injuries early this morning on a passenger train between Sugauli and Semra railway stations in East Champaran district, around 180km northwest of Patna.

The deceased, Chandra Bhushan Prasad alias Sheonath (31), was travelling on Gorakhpur-Muzaffarpur (2530) passenger train. He was shot at around 2.45am.

The injured duo — Damodar Prasad, (29), the younger brother of Chandra Bhushan, and Darshan Sah, (22), a student of Bagaha in West Champaran district — were travelling in the same coach.

The assailants opened fire when the train left Sugauli station. They alighted from the train near Bangra village railway crossing disconnecting the train’s hosepipes, which activate the brakes.

The bleeding victims were spotted when the train reached Bapudham Motihari despite Dilip Singh, the manager of the station in the East Central Railway, claiming that a GRP team was escorting the train.

Additional director-general (rail) Paras Nath Roy said four members of the escort team had been suspended.
