Two arrested for ATM theft

Two youths were arrested in Bokaro on Monday for stealing money from ATMs by tampering with the machines.

An ATM user, who had been duped by Rakesh Kumar Singh and Ananjay Kumar Singh, spotted the duo near an ATM at Naya More and alerted police.

Rakesh and Ananjay, both in their early 20s and hailing from Shridih in Dhanbad, used to target unmanned, manual ATMs that did not have touch-screen facilities, but the old key system. They mainly stole money from ATMs located at Naya More and Sector I. Till date, they have cheated six people of more than Rs 60,000.

According to police, the two had worked out a technique to slow down the money-vending process in the ATMs.

“One of the youths used to put adhesive in the gaps of the buttons and leave the kiosk while another would be on watch outside. Soon after a genuine customer stepped in, the other youth would queue up outside, posing as an ATM user. With the glue seeping in, the buttons would get stuck and the entire system would go slow,” said OC of city police station R.K. Singh.

Meanwhile, the youth waiting outside would ask the customer to hurry up or move over to some other ATM. “Confused, the customer would leave in a hurry without cancelling his transaction or even if he did so, it would not have worked as the button was stuck. Once the customer left, the youth would step in and take out cash,” said the officer.

After three persons, Kundan Mandal, Avinask Kumar, Nagendra Nath, who were cheated in the same fashion, filed complaints, the duo were identified with the help of CCTV cameras at the ATMs.

On Monday morning, Kundan spotted the two wandering near Naya More ATM and tried to confront the duo, who tried to escape. But police were informed, who acted promptly and nabbed the duo.
