Calcutta: India B, represented by veteran Gagan Verma and the young Udayan Mane, topped the leader-board in the international team event of the 112th Tata Steel Amateur Golf Championship that got underway at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, here, on Tuesday.
With a combined score of 151, the duo were five shots ahead of India C, which features Samarth Dwivedi and Syed Saquib Ahmed. India A, led by Simarjeet Singh and Karan Taunk, were placed third with a total of 161.
The Sri Lankan pair — Vijitha Bandara and Sisira Kumar — was fourth at 166, while Bhutan, comprising of Tshendra Dorji and Dechen Ugyen, were fifth at 167.
Bangladesh finished last, with the Malaysian team disqualified as one of their players — M. Wafiyuddin — mistakenly entered the wrong score on his last hole.
In the individual category, unheralded players outshone the favourites on a day when the course made things a tad difficult. Braving the situation, Hemendra Choudhary grabbed a four-shot lead after shooting a one-under par 71, the lone under-par score of the day.
Amit Kumar, Malaysia’s Abel Tam, Arjun Singh, Mane, Ankur Chadha, Jasjeet Singh and Shubhankar Sharma — all of them shot an identical 75 to share the second spot.
