Dial to nail auto teasers

The war against eve-teasing got a three-wheeler push in Ranchi on Friday.

Jharkhand Diesel Autochalak Sangh has started putting up cellphone details of its office-bearers on auto-rickshaws to enable women passengers to call up for help in any emergency or to report eve-teasing.

The move comes four days after a gutsy teenager in a Bokaro auto got a 45-year-old businessman co-passenger arrested for allegedly molesting her inside the moving vehicle.

The posters, which were put up behind autos in Kanta Toli Chowk, Radium Chowk and Kishori Yadav Chowk, will also be pasted on three-wheelers plying in the district in a couple of days.

Hum log mahilayon ka samman karte hain. Nissankoch auto par savari karein. Sahayta hetu nimn numbero par sampark karein (We respect women. Travel on auto-rickshaws without fear. Contact us on the following numbers for help),” the posters read.

Speaking to The Telegraph, vice president of the sangh Arjun Yadav said the move had been brought into effect after they received complaints from some women passengers that they had been targets of “misbehaviour” near Jail More. “Eve-teasers pose as passengers, share seats with women and try to grope or molest them during the journey,” Yadav said.

He claimed the posters with phone numbers would instill fear in molesters and give women and girls courage to seek redress.

“We have not received any complaint today (Friday). The circulation of our contact details has alerted eve-teasers,” he claimed.
