Maysalin passes away at 88

Shillong, Jan. 3: Former Meghalaya minister Maysalin War passed away today, following a brief illness. She was 88. Her funeral will take place on Saturday.

War, a former sergeant in the Women Army Corps, Calcutta, was born on January 15, 1924. She figured prominently in the hill state movement. She was nominated as a member of the First Provisional Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 1970. From 1988 to 1993, she was a member of the Assembly, representing Mawthen-gkut constituency in West Khasi Hills district on a Congress ticket.

In 1998, she was again elected from the same constituency under a Hill State People’s Democratic Party ticket. She also contested the 2008 Assembly elections as an Independent, but lost.
