Jawan held for molest attempt

Tezpur, Jan. 3: A jawan of the 34th CRPF battalion was arrested this evening for trying to rape a speech-impaired woman at Chauldhowa Adarsh village, 18km from the district headquarters of Lakhimpur in Assam.

Sources said the villagers caught the jawan, Mohan Singh, when he tried to rape the 40-year-old, whose house is located near the CRPF battalion camp, around 6.30pm. They handed him over to police.

The battalion is posted at Chauldhowa to guard the materials brought for the 2,000MW Lower Subansiri hydroelectric project by NHPC.

The materials have been dumped there since December last year because of protests by different organisations, including the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti.

Reacting promptly, the Lakhimpur district administration ordered a magisterial inquiry by Lakhimpur district magistrate D.J. Hazarika. He has been asked to submit his report at the earliest.

Lakhimpur deputy commissioner Anwaruddin Choudhury said no leniency would be shown if Singh was found guilty.

Singh will be produced in court tomorrow.
