Nifty at new high

Mumbai, Jan. 2: The passage of the “fiscal cliff” deal in the US helped the NSE Nifty breach the 6000-point mark for the first time in two years. The 50-share index opened marginally higher at 5982.60 and hit an intra-day peak of 6006.05 before ending at 5993.25, up 0.71 per cent over its last close. The Nifty had last scaled the 6000-mark on January 6, 2011 when the index settled at 6048.25.

New Delhi, Jan. 2: Renowned economist Urjit Patel’s name has been cleared for appointment as the new deputy governor of the RBI, department of financial services secretary D.K. Mittal said here.

Calcutta, Jan. 2: R.P.S. Kahlon has taken over as chairman, Calcutta Port Trust, from today. Earlier, he served as the principal secretary of the environment department.

A.L. Mudaliar

Chennai, Jan. 2: Noted industrialist and former chairman of India Cements A.L. Mudaliar died here today. Mudaliar, 87, is survived by his wife, daughter and a son.

Chit funds

Calcutta, Jan. 2: The Calcutta Stock Exchange is not against chit funds per se and plans to campaign only against illegal entities. Moreover, its MD and CEO Madhav Reddy was not present in Durgapur on December 29 as mentioned in the Business Telegraph report “City bourse campaign against chit funds” in the edition dated December 31, 2012. The error is regretted.
