Assam lose by an innings

- Gujarat and Kashmir top group tally with 23 points each

Guwahati, Jan. 1: Hosts Odisha inflicted an innings and 87-run defeat on Assam in their Cooch Behar Trophy (under-19) plate group A match in Cuttack today.

Chasing a target of 282 runs in the second innings to make Odisha bat again on the last day of the four-day affair, the visitors were all out for 195 in 65.4 overs, thanks to another five-wicket haul by S. Pradhan.

Bowling out Assam for 205 in the first innings, the hosts declared their first innings at 487 for eight in 142.3 overs yesterday.

Assam resumed their second innings at overnight 179 for six today and Sunzow Brahma, who was not out on 75, was dismissed by Pradhan after adding only one run to his overnight total.

Roshan Alam, who was on 23, also followed Brahma to the dressing room, bowled by Pradhan for 25 (4x3).

A. Yadav accounted for the remaining two tailenders — Sidhartha Sankar Baruah (5) and Mrinmoy Dutta (4) — in quick succession to send the visitors packing within 25 minutes of play today.

Pradhan returned with the figures of five for 42 while Yadav scalped three for 40.

Despite the bonus point, Odisha could not book a knockout berth as Jammu and Kashmir and Gujarat emerged the top two teams in the group with 23 points each. Odisha finished third with 21 points. Assam finished a lowly fifth in a group of six with only 10 points.
