‘Not so foolish’, PC skirts PM poser

New Delhi, Dec. 31: Finance minister P. Chidambaram today came up with a light-hearted quip, saying he wasn’t as “foolish” as “some of you think” when a reporter asked him about a suggestion that he was a potential candidate for Prime Minister.

“I tell you this: I know that some of you think I am foolish. But I am not so foolish as you think,” the minister told a media conference here.

But Chidambaram also had a “serious” answer to the demand that has been re-ignited since DMK chief M. Karunanidhi and actor Kamalahasan felt the finance minister was the best candidate for the post.

“I don’t know whether I should take your question very seriously. But let me give you a very serious answer. I know my limitations. And I live and conduct myself according to my limitations,” he said.

At a book release in Chennai yesterday, Karunanidhi had favoured a suggestion by Kamalahasan that Chidambaram was a potential Prime Minister.

Earlier this month, The Economist had said Chidambaram was likely to be the Congress’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 general election, not Rahul Gandhi.

The magazine had also said Congress president Sonia Gandhi trusted Chidambaram.

The party had then clarified that the high command would decide who should be the candidate for the top job.
