NETF players reign supreme, enter semis

Guwahati, Dec. 20: Hosts North East Tennis Foundation (NETF) players Ankit Kashyap, Priyana Kalita, Sahidul Islam, Jugal Baruah and Murchana Saharia have entered the semi-finals of their respective events in the Glaxo SmithKline-NETF All Assam Junior Ranking Tennis Championship at the NETF courts here.

While Ankit and Priyana booked round of four berths in under-14 and 18 boys’ and girls’ events, respectively, Sahidul made it to the boys’ under-18 semis, Jugal in the boys’ under-14 and Murchana in the girls’ under-18 category.

Arnabjan Lahkar of Duliajan also entered the boys’ under-14 and 18 semi-finals.

In the under-14 boys’ quarter-final played today, Ankit defeated Rituraj Gogoi 6-4, 6-4 and Arnabjan Lahkar got the better of Ronit Bora 6-1, 6-3. Aman Deo overcame Kritartha Hazarika 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 and Jugal defeated Raunak Bora 6-3, 6-4 for the other two berths.

In the boys’ under-18 quarter-final, Ankit once again prevailed over Rituraj Gogoi 6-3, 6-1 and Arnabjan humbled Raunak Bora 6-2, 6-3. Sahidul faced some challenge before overcoming Vishal Vivek Saikia 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and Aman tamed Jugal 6-1, 6-0 in the other two last eight matches.

Priyana blanked Chandrani Thakuria 6-0, 6-0 the girls’ under-14 quarterfinals. In the other three matches of the round, Harshita Nahata got the better of Natasha Baruah 6-3, 6-4, Bhumika Gupta overcame Raina Zaffar 7-5, 6-3 and Nazia Ahmed eased past Lenin Zamir 6-0, 6-1.

Named: The NETF today announced the naming of its office building and conference hall after founder-chairman late Prasanna Kumar Sarmah. NETF secretary Ankush Dutta said it would be formally announced on Saturday, marking the closing of the tournament.
